Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood. Center research has focused on understanding disparities in asthma and improving adherence to needed medications. Specific studies include:
- The Population-Based Effectiveness in Asthma and Lung Diseases (PEAL) Network, an AHRQ (R01) funded six-center collaborative that conducts comparative effectiveness and aherence research. The network is designed to support future work in pharmacogenetics and delivery science.
- The PGPop study, funded by an NIGMS grant, which aims to identify large groups of real-world patients with known drug exposures and outcomes for pharmacogenomic study in a clinical setting. Dr. Ann Wu led a sub-project on asthma and inhaled steroids.
- An AHRQ-funded study with the goal of addressing the comparative effectiveness and safety concerns of combined long-acting beta agonist (LABA) and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy for asthma, and to understand the profile of those who experience adverse events as well as those who benefit most from the combination therapy.
- A study funded by NHLBI that aimed to determine the genetic basis for differences observed in patient responses to various asthma treatments.
